Are Unarmored Leather Motorcycle Gloves Worth Wearing?

Let me start by conceding the point most gear writers dance around. A pair of unlined deerskin gloves has no impact protection in it. No knuckle armor, no scaphoid slider, no carbon, no CE certification. If you go down hard on your hands at speed, a $120 pair of deerskin gloves will not do what a $200 pair of certified racing gloves will do. That is not a subtle difference and pretending otherwise is how gear sites lose readers.

I still wear them for most of my riding, and I think that is a defensible choice rather than a lazy one. But it depends entirely on what kind of riding you do, and there are riders I would tell flatly to buy something else. This post is my attempt to lay out both halves honestly, because the deerskin question gets answered by enthusiasm on one side and by internet scolding on the other, and neither is useful when you are about to spend money.

What Unarmored Deerskin Actually Does

Start with the honest list of real benefits, because there are several and they are not trivial.

  • Abrasion. Leather is a genuinely good abrasion surface. In a low speed get-off, the kind that happens in gravel at a stop sign or in a parking lot at 15 mph, a leather glove is the difference between a scuffed glove and a palm you have to pick gravel out of.

  • Wind. Below about 65 degrees, bare hands stop working properly. Cold fingers are slow fingers, and slow fingers on a front brake lever is its own safety problem. Deerskin blocks wind well down to roughly 50 degrees unlined.

  • Grip and feel. Deerskin is unusually supple. You can feel the friction zone through it. This is the reason experienced riders keep coming back to it, and it is a real functional advantage over stiff, padded gloves.

  • Vibration and sun. Six hours on a twin with bare hands leaves you with numb fingers and burned backs of hands. A glove fixes both, and that is a comfort argument that turns into a fatigue argument on a long day.

  • Small debris. Bugs at 70 mph hurt. Rocks kicked up by the car ahead hurt more. This is the most common thing gloves actually protect you from, by a wide margin.

What They Genuinely Do Not Do

They do not protect your knuckles from impact. If your hand hits a curb, a bumper, or the road at an angle, the glove distributes almost nothing. Certified gloves put a hard or foam shell over the knuckles specifically for this, and there is no leather equivalent.

They do not protect the scaphoid. When people fall, they put their hands out. The heel of the palm takes the load and the scaphoid bone is the classic motorcycle wrist fracture. Race and touring gloves address this with a palm slider that lets your hand skate rather than catch. Unarmored gloves have nothing there.

They are not certified to anything. The European standard for motorcycle gloves, EN 13594, tests seam strength, abrasion, cut, and impact, and gloves that pass carry a CE mark and a level rating. Deerskin gloves from Legendary, Churchill, or any similar American maker are not submitted to that testing and do not carry that mark. I am not going to imply a rating exists where one does not.

Seams are the real failure point at speed. A glove can have excellent leather and still open up along a stitch line in a slide, which is exactly what the standard tests for. This is why construction detail matters more than hide brand, and why a welted or outseam glove holds together better than a cheaply overlocked one.

The Speed Question, Answered Plainly

Everything about glove protection scales with speed, and the honest way to think about it is that leather buys you time and time runs out fast. Under about 30 mph, in the incidents that make up most real world drops, unarmored leather does most of what you need. Above about 50 mph, the loads move past what any unarmored glove is built for, and the difference between certified and uncertified gear stops being theoretical.

Notice that this is a statement about what your riding actually looks like, not about which gear is better. Someone who spends 90 percent of their miles under 45 mph on town roads has a materially different risk profile than someone doing 300 mile interstate days. Both riders can be right about their gloves and be making opposite choices.

What I will not do is tell you a thicker glove is armor. Hide thickness helps with abrasion. It does nothing for impact. Those are separate problems solved by separate materials, and a lot of marketing quietly blurs them.

Who Unarmored Gloves Actually Suit

They suit riders whose main risk is discomfort rather than a high speed slide: town and back road riders, cruiser riders doing 40 to 55 mph, anyone who wants maximum lever feel, and riders who want a glove that molds to their hand over 500 miles and stays that way for years. They also suit riders who will wear a good glove every ride and abandon a bulky one, which is a bigger factor than most people admit. The best glove is the one on your hands.

If that describes you, buy on construction rather than brand. Welted seams, an outseam palm so the stitching is not against your skin, and a real gusseted thumb. When You Should Buy CE-Rated Gloves Instead

I would tell you to buy certified gloves without hesitation in four cases. If you ride sport or do track days, where a fall means a slide at speed. If your commute is mostly highway. If you are a new rider in your first season, when drops are statistically most likely and your hands go out reflexively. And if you have already broken a wrist or a scaphoid, because the second one comes easier than the first.

In those cases the brand I point people to is Held. Their gloves are German made, genuinely CE-rated, and the palm and knuckle construction is the real thing rather than a decorative panel. They cost more than deerskin and they feel less connected to the bars, and both of those are honest tradeoffs you are making on purpose. I own a pair for highway days and a pair of deerskin for everything else, which is probably the most sensible answer for a rider who can afford two pairs.

A middle path exists too. Some unarmored gloves add a lined palm for abrasion without claiming any impact rating. An aramid-lined palm is a real material improvement on the surface that hits the ground first. It is still not a certified glove, and it should not be sold to you as one.

The Honest Bottom Line

Unarmored leather gloves are worth wearing, and they are not a substitute for certified gloves. Both of those statements are true and the whole argument comes from people insisting on only one of them. Wearing deerskin is far better than wearing nothing, which is what a lot of riders actually do on hot days, and it is worse than wearing a rated glove in a serious crash.

My practical advice: if you have $125 and you ride mostly under 55 mph, buy good deerskin and wear it every single ride. If you ride highway daily or you are in your first season, put that money toward a CE-rated pair first, then buy deerskin later for the days you want the feel.
