If you want a genuine mil-spec A-2 that you will actually reach for on cool days, this is the one.

The horsehide Flying Tigers A-2 (around $977)

Horsehide is the heritage choice. It is denser, more abrasion-resistant, breaks in slowly, and lasts decades while developing a deep patina. The Flying Tigers A-2 is the jacket to buy if you want the most durable, most authentic-feeling A-2 in the lineup and you do not mind putting in the break-in miles.

Honest notes on fit and tier

Two things this crowd already knows: Cockpit A-2s run oversized, with a shorter body, longer sleeves, and wider shoulders than most repros, so use their fitting system and do not just order your tagged size. And on finish, Cockpit is respected mid-tier, not the same bracket as Aero, Good Wear, or Real McCoy's, which cost a great deal more. For the money and the DoD provenance, though, it is a lot of jacket.
