What Harley-Davidson's Own Labels Say About Where MotorClothes Are Made

Published September 1, 2026. This page reports what Harley-Davidson's own product pages state in their Country of Origin field, and lists every Harley-Davidson dealer location in the United States as of the audit date. Nothing here is an allegation about any individual dealer. The dealer data and the origin data both come from Harley-Davidson's own website.
What we found
Harley-Davidson publishes a field called "Country of Origin Copy" on its MotorClothes product pages, displayed to shoppers under the heading "Origin." We read that field on every live apparel product page we could reach.
Of the 22 live MotorClothes product pages we examined across eight categories, 18 stated an origin. Seventeen said "Imported." One said "Made in the USA of imported material." Four had the origin field present but left blank. None said "Made in USA."
That covers leather jackets, riding gloves, riding boots, leather vests, t-shirts, riding jeans and pants, hoodies and fleece, and waterproof riding jackets. Every category returned the same answer.
Two things worth saying immediately, because they matter more than the headline.
First, Harley is not hiding this. The origin field is on the page, in the product details, on the record. A company that wanted to conceal foreign manufacturing would not publish a structured origin attribute on its products. What is happening here is disclosure, not deception, and the distinction matters if you are deciding how angry to be.
Second, this is not a dealer story. We pulled Harley-Davidson's own dealer directory: 604 listed locations across all 50 states, which collapse to 597 distinct storefronts once repeat listings are merged, and by Harley's own data 591 of those carry MotorClothes. Dealers are not choosing to skip American-made gear. They stock the catalog the factory sends them. Blaming the shop in your town for what the label says is aiming at the wrong target.
How we checked
Method matters on a story like this, so here is exactly what we did and exactly where it falls short.
Dealers. Harley-Davidson's US sitemap lists a page for every dealer location. We pulled all 604, then read the structured data each page carries: name, city, state, phone, website, and Harley's own service flags including hasMotorClothes. Every one of the 604 returned successfully. Nothing here is scraped from a third-party aggregator. Those 604 listings are not 604 businesses. Seven are repeat listings of the same name in the same city, including six separate entries for Las Vegas Harley-Davidson, which leaves 597 distinct storefronts. Even 597 overstates the number of independent companies, because dealer groups run multiple locations: seven listings share one website, another six share another.
Origin. We read the raw product data embedded in each MotorClothes page and extracted the Country of Origin attribute verbatim. We did not paraphrase, interpret, or infer. If the field said "Imported," we recorded "Imported."
Sample. Harley's shop does not expose a product list that can be crawled, so product URLs were gathered from search results. Twenty-five of those URLs returned HTTP 404 when we checked them, meaning the products had been rotated out, so they are excluded rather than counted. That leaves 22 live pages. This is a sample, not a census. We are not claiming to have audited the entire MotorClothes catalog, and you should discount anyone who claims they have.
A larger sample would make the proportion more precise. It is unlikely to change the direction, because the result was unanimous across eight unrelated product categories, but we would rather tell you the sample size than round it away.

Note the inconsistency in Harley's own data entry: "Imported," "Imported." with a period, and "imported" in lower case all appear, which is a housekeeping detail rather than a meaningful difference. The four blank fields are more interesting. On those four boots the attribute exists and carries no value, so the page tells the shopper nothing at all.
What those words mean, legally
"Imported" and "Made in the USA of imported material" are not casual marketing phrases. They sit inside a Federal Trade Commission framework, and knowing the framework is what lets you read a label properly.
An unqualified "Made in USA" claim is the strict one. The FTC requires that "all significant processing that goes into the product occurs in the United States, and all or virtually all ingredients or components of the product are made and sourced in the United States." The agency's plain-language version of the test is that the product should contain "no, or negligible, foreign content." Under the 2021 Made in USA Labeling Rule, getting this wrong carries civil penalties.
"Made in the USA of imported material" is a qualified claim. Qualified claims describe "the extent, amount or type of a product's domestic content or processing." So that one Freedom for All tee is telling you something specific and honest: the sewing happened here, the fabric did not. That is a genuine American manufacturing job, and it is not the same thing as an American-made product. Both halves of that sentence are true and both matter.
"Imported" means what you think it means. US Customs requires imported goods to carry a country-of-origin mark. The FTC layers its own advertising standard on top, so a product Customs clears can still run into trouble if the marketing implies more American content than exists.
The reason to lay this out is that the interesting question is not whether Harley is lying. On this evidence Harley is describing its products accurately. The interesting question is the gap between what the brand sells emotionally and what the label states factually, and that gap is something each rider gets to weigh for themselves.
Why your dealer is not the problem
We built the full dealer list specifically to test the assumption buried in this question, and the data does not support it.
Harley-Davidson lists 604 dealer locations in the United States, spread across all 50 states. Merging repeat listings of the same name in the same city leaves 597 distinct storefronts, run by a smaller number of dealer groups again. By Harley's own service flags, 591 of the 597 carry MotorClothes. The six that do not are small or specialty locations: Tombstone Harley-Davidson in Arizona, Beach Shack Harley-Davidson in Florida, Pacific Harley-Davidson and Pearl Harbor Harley-Davidson in Honolulu, Central Maine Harley-Davidson, and H-D Military Sales in New York.
That is 99 percent of the network stocking the apparel line, which is the opposite of dealers making a sourcing choice. A franchised dealer sells the manufacturer's catalog. The origin of that catalog is decided in Milwaukee and in the factories Milwaukee contracts with, not behind the counter in your town. If you walk into your local dealership annoyed about a label, you are annoyed at somebody who had no say in it.
What a dealer can control is what else they choose to put on the shelf next to it. That varies enormously, it is not published anywhere, and we did not attempt to audit 597 inventories. If your dealer stocks American-made gear, that is a real decision they made and worth your business.

Where American-made riding gear actually comes from
If the label matters to you, the practical question is who is still cutting and sewing riding gear in the United States. It is a short list, and it is short for unglamorous reasons: domestic hide, domestic labor and small production runs cost more per unit than offshore manufacturing, and most of the market votes on price.
Gloves are the easiest category to buy American, because a few small US shops never left. Legendary USA's Classic Deerskin Gauntlets, $75 to $145 depending on size and rated 4.88 stars across 112 reviews, are cut and sewn in the United States from American whitetail deerskin. Be clear about what that does and does not buy you: these are unarmored and carry no CE certification, so they are an abrasion and comfort choice, not impact protection. If certified knuckle armor is your priority, that is a different product category and brands like Alpinestars and Held serve it better.
Jackets and vests are harder and more expensive. BECK's 732 Northeaster in genuine horsehide, $815 to $885 and rated 4.94 stars across 34 reviews, and the BECK 566 horsehide vest at $440 to $460, are made in the USA, and Vanson and Langlitz are the other established American names in that band. Expect to pay two to three times what an imported equivalent costs, because that is roughly the real difference in input cost. None of these are armored as sold.
We are not going to pretend the imported gear is junk. Plenty of it is well made, and Harley's textile riding jackets in particular do things heritage leather does not, like waterproof membranes and integrated armor pockets. The honest framing is that made in America is one attribute you can weigh alongside price, protection and fit, not a proxy for quality.

We did not audit any dealer's shelves. Not one, anywhere. Every dealer figure on this page is Harley's own published data about its own network, and nothing here says or implies that any named dealership declines to stock American-made gear.
Dealer counts are slippery and change. Harley's sitemap listed 604 locations on September 1, 2026. Seven are duplicate name-and-city entries, giving 597 distinct storefronts, and multi-store dealer groups mean the number of separate companies is lower still. Anyone quoting a single clean dealer count, us included, is simplifying.
Origin fields can change. Harley can update a product's sourcing or its data entry at any time. Every figure here is as-published on the audit date, and the product URLs are recorded so anyone can re-check them.
