Motorcycle Vest Sizing Guide: How to Measure and What Size to Buy

A leather motorcycle vest is one of the few pieces of gear you buy once and wear for decades, so getting the size right matters more than with almost anything else in your kit. The most common mistake I see is ordering by a T-shirt or jacket size instead of an actual chest measurement. Here is how to get it right the first time.

Measure your chest, not your ego

Wrap a flexible tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it level across your back and under your arms. Wear the shirt or light layer you actually plan to ride in. That number is your starting point. A vest should sit close but comfortable over that layer, with roughly 2 to 3 inches of ease so it lies flush against your torso without straining the snaps.

The chest size chart

Most quality American vest makers size to measured chest like this: XS 34 to 36 in, S 36 to 38, M 38 to 40, L 40 to 42, XL 42 to 44, XXL 44 to 46, XXXL 46 to 48, 4XL 48 to 50. If your measurement lands between two sizes, size up. Side laces can bring a vest in an inch or two, but nothing can make it larger.

Big and tall, and layering

If you carry width through the shoulders and back, or you plan to wear the vest over a hoodie or flannel, size up a full size. A hoodie adds roughly 2 to 4 inches of effective chest. For big and tall builds, also check the vest length so it covers your waistband by an inch or two.

Does leather stretch?

A little. Full-grain leather relaxes and molds to your torso with wear, but it will not grow a full size. Horsehide, used in BECK vests, is especially stable and holds its shape for decades. Buy snug rather than loose and rely on the side laces for fine adjustment.
