Myrtle Beach Bike Week: Spring vs Fall

Myrtle Beach Bike Week is a twice-yearly rally on the South Carolina coast, and the 2026 Fall Rally runs September 25 to October 4, 2026, spread along the Grand Strand from North Myrtle Beach to Georgetown. The spring half is the bigger one and lands in May, but as of August 2026 the organizer has not announced 2027 spring dates, so if that is the trip you want, you are waiting. The 2026 Spring Rally ran May 8 to 17 as the 87th annual. Both halves are run by Myrtle Beach Bike Week, and neither one has a gate, a wristband or an admission price.

It suits riders who want a long, loose, warm-weather event with no schedule and who are fine with the center of the rally being a stretch of highway bars in Murrells Inlet rather than anything in the city of Myrtle Beach. It does not suit riders who come for roads. The Grand Strand is flat, straight and busy, and during rally weeks the traffic on Highway 17 is the ride.

What the Fall Rally Actually Is

The rally started in 1940 as a hot dog roast on the sand organized by the Piedmont Harley-Davidson Dealers Association, making it one of the oldest continuously running motorcycle events in the country. It has no central venue, no ticket and no main stage, just a region full of businesses that each decide independently to run rally programming across the same stretch of days.

That is why the dates are soft at the edges. The organizer says outright that some businesses want ten days and others will advertise shorter dates, so September 25 to October 4 is the outer envelope, not a promise that every bar runs full tilt on day one. Officially licensed rally retailers include Sparky's, Gay Dolphin, Jamin Leather, Klig's Kites and Boulineau's.

Why the Rally Sits in Murrells Inlet and Not Myrtle Beach

This is what first-timers get wrong, and it matters before you book a beach room expecting to walk out into a rally. In the autumn of 2008, Myrtle Beach City Council passed fifteen ordinances aimed at the rallies. Ordinance 2008-64 required helmets inside city limits, stricter than state law, with a hundred dollar fine. Another capped exhaust noise, first at 83 decibels and later 92 decibels measured 20 inches from the pipe. Attendance dropped by double digits the following spring. In 2010 the South Carolina Supreme Court struck it down unanimously in Aakjer v. City of Myrtle Beach, holding that state law preempted it and that a patchwork of city equipment rules would unduly limit a citizen's freedom of movement through the state.

The court won the legal argument and the city won the practical one. By the time the rule was voided, the rally had already moved south into unincorporated Horry County, onto U.S. 17 through Murrells Inlet, where county rules apply instead of city rules. That is where it still is. Suck Bang Blow at 3393 Highway 17 has anchored it for close to thirty years, with a three-sided burnout enclosure where riders spin tires until they let go and crowd noise picks the $250 winner. The Beaver Bar is in the same orbit. On a rally night these go from local watering holes to thousands deep. The organizer is blunt about the cause: its own site says the restrictions put in place by the different cities and elected officials of Horry County meant the time had come to expand beyond those borders, and from 2011 it pushed events out to Calabash, Wilmington and Charleston.

Spring or Fall: The Honest Comparison

Spring is the famous one and the crowded one. Reported figures put it at roughly 300,000 to 400,000 people on a given day against 150,000 to 250,000 in the fall. The rally chairperson's summary is the useful one: you get more elbow room in the fall, and a lot of people like that.

The weather favors fall. Late September and October on the Grand Strand runs in the 70s where May runs in the 80s, so the fall crowd wears leather instead of t-shirts, and the event skews more toward families closing out the summer. The tradeoff is that fewer businesses go all in. If your measure of a rally is scale, spring wins and it is not close. If it is getting a table and riding without a mile of stopped traffic, fall wins.

Atlantic Beach Bikefest Is a Separate Event

Do not conflate these. Atlantic Beach Bikefest, also called the Black Pearl Cultural Heritage and Bike Festival, is a different rally, in a different town, on a different weekend, run by different people. It happens every Memorial Day weekend in the Town of Atlantic Beach, its own municipality inside the Grand Strand, and the town's own site says it draws crowds in excess of 400,000 people.

It was founded in 1980 by a local Black motorcycle club and grew where it did because Atlantic Beach was, as the town puts it, the only beach in the entire southern United States where Black families were welcomed and not banned. It is not part of Myrtle Beach Bike Week and shares no organizer with the Fall Rally. As of August 2026 the town had published no specific 2027 dates, stating only that it is held every year during Memorial Day weekend.

The Riding, and What to Expect From It

U.S. 17 is the spine of the whole thing, and the Murrells Inlet stretch is where the traffic and the bars are. To get around it, SC 707 runs 12.6 miles from U.S. 17 Business in Murrells Inlet past Burgess and Socastee to an interchange with U.S. 17 near the Market Common. Learn that bypass.

The best short ride goes south. Huntington Beach State Park sits at 16148 Ocean Highway, eight dollars for adults, with Brookgreen Gardens close by on land left by the same family. Georgetown is a real stop past that, a working waterfront town with somewhere to park and eat. Charleston is about 95 miles from Myrtle Beach on U.S. 17, roughly two hours when traffic behaves, so it is a full day out and back. What you will not find is elevation. Ride this coast for the marsh views, not corners.

Gear for Grand Strand Humidity

Late September and early October on the South Carolina coast is the best window of the year: days in the 70s instead of the 80s, still humid, still capable of a fast afternoon thunderstorm, and cool enough after dark at highway speed that riders put leather back on. Pack both ends of that.

Common Questions

Is there an admission fee or a wristband for the Fall Rally?

No, there is no gate and no ticket for the rally itself. It is a regional event made of independent businesses, so you pay for parking, food, drinks and whatever a bar charges at the door, not for entry.

Are the spring 2027 dates announced yet?

Not as of August 2026. The organizer says only that the Spring Rally takes place in May each year, and the most recent edition ran May 8 to 17, 2026. Anyone quoting you exact 2027 spring dates is guessing.

Should I stay in Myrtle Beach or Murrells Inlet?

Stay in Murrells Inlet or Garden City if the bar scene is why you are going, because the rally's center of gravity moved out of the city after 2008 and never came back. Myrtle Beach proper is cheaper, quieter and a short ride from the action.

Worth Going?

Yes, with the right expectation. The fall dates give a real rally atmosphere without the spring crush, in the best weather the Grand Strand gets all year, and ten days is long enough to pick your nights.
