Motorcycle Clicks But Won't Start: How to Find the Cause

A click means the starter relay is working and the starter motor is not turning. Current is either not available, because the battery is weak, or not arriving, because a cable, connection or ground is resisting it, or not usable, because the relay contacts or the starter itself have failed. Voltage drop testing separates all three in about ten minutes.

Two different sounds live on this page and they mean different things.
A single solid clunk or click, then nothing. The relay pulled in and the main contacts closed, but the starter did not turn. Suspect the cable path, the relay contacts, or the starter.
Rapid chattering, a machine-gun clicking. The relay closes, the resulting current collapses the voltage, the relay drops out, voltage recovers, and it closes again. That cycle is almost always a battery too weak to hold voltage under load, or a connection that cannot pass current.
Before you touch anything
The circuit you are working on carries the highest current on the motorcycle, easily a hundred amps or more, and considerably more at the instant of engagement. A spanner bridging a positive terminal to the frame will weld itself in place and can burst a battery.
Transmission in neutral, bike properly supported, before any test that could crank the engine.
Remove rings and a metal watch strap. A ring across a battery terminal causes serious burns.
Eye protection near the battery. Ventilate the space.
Disconnect negative first, reconnect negative last.
Do not lay tools on top of the battery.
Step one, measure the battery at rest
Set the meter to DC volts across the battery terminals with everything off. If you are new to the meter, read how to use a multimeter on a motorcycle first.

Below about 12.0 volts, charge the battery fully before drawing any conclusion. Diagnosing a starting circuit on a flat battery wastes an afternoon and points at innocent parts. These resting figures are lead-acid chemistry, not model data, so they hold across conventional and AGM motorcycle batteries. Lithium batteries behave differently and should be judged against the maker's own figures.
Step two, watch the voltage while you press the starter
This is the single most useful measurement on the page. Leave the meter connected across the battery terminals, set to DC volts, and watch the display while a helper presses the starter.

A commonly used rule of thumb, borrowed from the standard battery load test, is that a healthy battery stays above roughly 9.6 volts under a heavy load at moderate temperature. It is a sanity check rather than your machine's cranking specification, which is a figure in the factory service manual.
Step three, find the resistance with voltage drop testing
Resistance in a high current circuit does not show up on a resistance measurement taken with no current flowing. It shows up as voltage lost across a connection while current flows. That is what voltage drop testing measures, and it is the technique that finds the faults everyone else misses.
With the meter on DC volts, put one probe on each side of the connection you are testing, then have a helper press the starter for a second or two while you read the display. You are measuring what is being lost across that one junction.
Battery positive post to positive cable clamp. Probe the lead post itself and the metal of the clamp, not the insulation.

Relay output to the starter motor terminal.
Starter case to battery negative, the return path.
Battery negative post to negative cable clamp, and clamp to frame or engine ground point.
Widely used workshop rules of thumb are that a good cable or connection loses under about 0.2 volts and a good ground under about 0.1 volts. Anything much above that is where your current is going. The connection with the largest drop is your fault. This is how a corroded earth strap that looks perfectly fine gets caught.
Step four, separating the relay from the starter
If the voltage arrives at the starter relay input but very little leaves it while cranking, the relay's internal contacts are burnt. That is a common wear item and it produces exactly the single-click symptom.
If full battery voltage reaches the starter motor terminal while cranking and the motor still does nothing, and the ground path is good, the starter itself is the suspect. One more possibility worth ruling out before condemning a starter: a seized or hydrolocked engine will also produce a click, because the starter cannot turn what will not move. If the engine will not turn over by hand either, stop and investigate that before buying electrical parts.

When to stop and take it to a shop
Stop if the engine will not turn over by hand. Stop if you see melted insulation or a cable that has discoloured with heat, because that circuit has been carrying current it should not have. Stop if the battery case is swollen, hot or leaking. And do not keep pressing the starter repeatedly hoping it catches, since a stalled starter motor draws very heavy current and will overheat.

Why does my motorcycle click once and then nothing?

Why does it click rapidly instead of once?
Rapid clicking is the relay cycling. Each time it closes, the load pulls voltage down far enough that the relay drops out, then voltage recovers and it closes again. That is the signature of a battery or connection that cannot supply the current the starter is asking for.
My battery reads 12.6 volts. Can it still be the battery?
Yes. Resting voltage measures state of charge, not capacity. A battery with damaged plates can read 12.6 volts at rest and collapse instantly under a starter load. That is precisely why step two asks you to watch the voltage while cranking rather than only before.
Will jump starting from a car damage my motorcycle?
The risk comes from the car's engine running, since a car charging system can push far more current into a small motorcycle battery than it is designed to take. If you jump start, leave the donor vehicle switched off. Also note that a successful jump start tells you the starting circuit works and points the investigation back at the battery or charging system.
Can a bad ground cause clicking?
Yes, and it is frequently missed because a ground strap can look clean and still be a poor conductor under load. Current has to return to the battery. Include the ground path in your voltage drop testing every time.
