A motorcycle that will not start is telling you which system failed by how it fails. Listen first. A bike that cranks normally but never fires has a fuel, spark or compression problem. A bike that clicks has a current delivery problem. A bike that does nothing at all has a power or interlock problem. Start there, not at the parts counter.

Before you touch anything
Put the bike on level ground with the transmission in neutral and the machine properly supported. If you smell fuel, stop and find out why before you turn a key or press a starter. A fuel leak plus an electrical spark is the one failure mode on this page that can seriously hurt you.
Lead-acid batteries vent hydrogen while charging, and hydrogen is explosive. Work in ventilated space, keep sparks and flames away from the battery, and wear eye protection when you are near the terminals. When you disconnect a battery, take the negative off first and put it back on last, so a slipped wrench cannot short the positive to the frame.
Step one, the only question that matters
Turn the key on, kill switch to run, transmission in neutral, and press the starter. What you hear next splits the whole problem into four branches. Do not skip this. Riders who guess at this step end up buying a battery for a fuel problem.

Step two, the free checks that solve a real share of no-starts
Before any testing, rule out the machine simply refusing to start because it has been told not to. Every one of these costs nothing and takes seconds.
Kill switch. Check it with your eyes, not your memory. A switch knocked to off in a car park is a common and embarrassing cause.
Neutral. Confirm the neutral light is on. If it is not, the bike may be in gear even though it feels like neutral.
Clutch lever. Most machines will not crank in gear unless the clutch is pulled in. Pull it fully.
Side stand. Retract it fully. A side stand switch that is dirty or bent can read as down when it is up.
Fuel. Look in the tank rather than trusting the gauge. On a bike with a petcock, confirm it is on or on reserve.
Main fuse and ignition fuse. Find the fuse box and check the main fuse and the ignition fuse. A blown main fuse produces total silence.
On many machines the neutral, clutch and side stand switches feed a starter interlock circuit, so any one of them can block cranking on its own. If your neutral light is dead but the bike is definitely in neutral, treat the switch as a suspect rather than assuming the gearbox is at fault.
Step three, is there enough battery to work with
Almost every branch below depends on knowing whether the battery is healthy, so measure it before you go further. Set a multimeter to DC volts and touch the red probe to the positive terminal and the black probe to the negative terminal. If you have not used a meter before, start with how to use a multimeter on a motorcycle.
These resting figures are properties of lead-acid chemistry rather than of any particular model, so they apply across conventional and AGM 12 volt motorcycle batteries. Let the bike sit for a few hours first if it has just been ridden or charged, because a surface charge reads high.

Lithium iron phosphate batteries do not follow this table. They sit higher when full and hold voltage flat until they fall off sharply, so use the figures the battery maker publishes rather than these.

Working through the branches
Each branch below is a full diagnostic path. Follow the one that matches what you heard in step one.
The engine cranks but will not fire. Fuel, spark, compression and air, tested in that order.
It clicks but will not crank. Separating a dead battery from a bad connection from a failed relay or starter.

When to stop and take it to a shop
Stop if you find fuel leaking anywhere, if you smell burning insulation, if a wiring harness has melted, or if the fault involves the anti-lock braking system or an immobiliser. Stop if the engine cranks with an unusual mechanical noise, because continuing to crank can turn a cheap repair into an expensive one. And stop if you are working beyond the tools you have, since a partially disassembled bike in a garage helps nobody.
Frequently asked questions
Why will my motorcycle not start but the lights still work?
Lights draw very little current compared with a starter motor. A battery can hold enough charge to light a dash brightly and still collapse the instant a starter asks it for a hundred amps or more. Bright lights prove there is voltage, not that there is capacity.
Can a bad ground stop a motorcycle from starting?
Yes, and it is one of the most commonly missed causes. Current has to return to the battery as well as leave it. A corroded or loose earth strap produces symptoms that look exactly like a weak battery or a failing starter. Voltage drop testing, covered in the multimeter guide, is how you find it.
How long can a motorcycle sit before it will not start?
There is no single number. It depends on the battery's health, the ambient temperature and how much current the bike draws while parked. A machine with a healthy battery and a small standing draw may sit for months. One with a marginal battery and a heavier draw can be flat in a fortnight. If yours goes flat while parked, that is a measurable fault, not bad luck.
Should I bump start it?
A bump start can get you home, but it proves only that the engine will run. It does not fix anything, and on a fuel injected machine with a very low battery it may not work at all, because the fuel pump and engine management need voltage before the engine will fire. Treat it as transport, not as a diagnosis.
Is it the battery or the starter?
Measure rather than guess. A battery that reads healthy at rest and collapses under cranking load is failing. A battery that holds voltage while the starter does nothing points at the cable, the relay or the starter itself. The clicking guide separates these three properly.
