Motorcycle Won't Crank and Makes No Click: What to Check

Total silence when you press the starter is a different problem from a click. Nothing in the start circuit is energising at all. That points at power reaching the circuit, a blown fuse, a ground, or one of the safety interlock switches that are designed to stop the bike cranking. Most causes here are cheap, and several are free.

Before you touch anything
The risk here is lower than on the high current pages, but the battery still deserves respect.
Transmission in neutral and the bike properly supported, in case a test succeeds and the engine cranks.
Remove rings and any metal watch strap before working near the battery terminals.
Eye protection near the battery, and ventilate the space. Lead-acid batteries vent hydrogen, which is explosive.
If you disturb a battery cable, disconnect the negative first and reconnect it last.
Do not lay tools on top of the battery.
Work through this in order. The sequence goes from free to expensive deliberately.
Step one, does the bike have power at all
Turn the ignition on and look at the dash.

Step two, the interlocks, because they are free
Manufacturers build in switches whose entire job is to prevent the engine cranking in unsafe conditions. Any one of them can fail and produce complete silence. Check all of them before you buy anything.
Engine stop or kill switch. Look at it. Work it back and forth several times, since the contacts corrode and a few operations sometimes restore them temporarily, which is itself a useful diagnosis.
Neutral switch. Is the neutral light on? If the light is dead but the bike is definitely in neutral, the switch or its wiring is a strong suspect. As a cross check, pull the clutch in fully and try the starter. If it now cranks, the neutral circuit is your fault.
Clutch switch. A small plunger switch at the clutch lever. Pull the lever fully to the bar. If it cranks only when the lever is squeezed hard, the switch is out of adjustment or worn.
Side stand switch. Retract the stand fully. These switches sit low, take road spray and salt, and fail often. Cycling the stand up and down a few times sometimes restores contact.
Starter button. Buttons corrode internally, especially on machines parked outside. Work it repeatedly.
A useful pattern: if the bike cranks in one combination of neutral, clutch and stand positions but not another, you have located the failing switch without any test equipment.
Step three, fuses
Find the fuse box. On most machines it is under the seat or behind a side panel, and the lid usually carries a legend telling you what each fuse protects. Check the main fuse first, then the ignition fuse, then anything labelled for the starter or the engine management.
Pull each fuse and look through it rather than judging by eye in place, since a hairline break is easy to miss. Better still, check continuity with a multimeter. Replace only with the same rating printed on the fuse and in the manual. Fitting a higher rated fuse to stop it blowing removes the protection that was doing its job and can start a fire.
A fuse that blows again immediately is telling you there is a short. Do not keep feeding it fuses. Find the short.
Step four, is the ignition switch passing power
With the meter on DC volts, measure at the battery, then measure downstream of the ignition switch with the key on. If full voltage is present at the switch input and little or nothing leaves it, the switch or its connector is the fault. Ignition switch connectors are a common corrosion point on older machines.
Step five, grounds
Every circuit needs a return path. A main earth strap between engine and frame, or frame and battery negative, that has corroded will produce symptoms across the whole bike, often including complete silence at the starter.
Test grounds by voltage drop rather than by resistance. Voltage drop only appears while current is actually flowing, and on a bike that does nothing at all there is no starter current to use, so you have to load the circuit yourself. Switch the headlight to high beam, or hold the horn, then put the meter on DC volts with one probe on the battery negative post and the other on bare metal on the engine case. A widely used workshop rule of thumb is that a good ground loses under about 0.1 volts under load. A high reading means the return path is choked, and a reading of zero with nothing switched on tells you nothing at all. The method is covered step by step in how to use a multimeter on a motorcycle.
Step six, the start circuit itself
If power is present, fuses are good, interlocks are satisfied and grounds are sound, what remains is the low current side of the start circuit: the starter button, the wiring to the relay, and the relay's own coil. On many machines you can hear and feel the relay click when the coil energises, which is why silence points here. A wiring diagram is the single most useful document for this fault, and it is the main reason a service manual earns its price on an older machine.
When to stop and take it to a shop
Stop if the machine has an immobiliser or keyless system and the security indicator is behaving abnormally, since those usually require a dealer diagnostic tool and sometimes a key relearn. Stop if a fuse blows repeatedly and you cannot locate the short. Stop if you find damaged, chafed or melted wiring in a loom, because a harness repair done badly becomes a fire risk.

A lit dash proves the ignition circuit has power, which rules out a lot. The fault is downstream, in the start circuit or an interlock. Work through the kill switch, neutral, clutch and side stand before anything else, because those are free to check and fail often.
Can a side stand switch really stop the bike starting?
Yes. It is a safety feature, not a fault, and the switch itself is exposed to road salt and spray. On a machine that will not crank with the stand up, try cycling the stand fully down and up several times, then retry. If that changes the behaviour, the switch is the problem.
Why does it crank with the clutch pulled in but not in neutral?
Because the neutral side of the interlock is failing while the clutch side still works. Most likely the neutral switch, its wiring, or the neutral indicator circuit. The bike is not broken in a dangerous way, but the switch should be repaired rather than worked around permanently.
Is it safe to bypass an interlock switch to get home?
Bypassing one removes a safety feature that exists to stop a bike lurching forward when started in gear, or riding away with the stand down. As a temporary roadside measure some riders do it. As a permanent fix it is a bad idea, and we would not recommend leaving a machine that way.
The main fuse blew. Can I just fit a bigger one?
No. The fuse rating is chosen to protect the wiring, and wire that is protected by too large a fuse can overheat before the fuse ever blows. A fuse that blows is reporting a fault. Fit the correct rating and find the cause.
